Has anyone read WALDEN by THOREAU?

I am having trouble analyzing the different elements of style in these passages. i am suppose to tie the authors purpose with stylistic elements :

‘Clouds covered the one bright moon-dark, froeboding clouds. the wind began to pick up. it howled. it rattled trees. the shudders on the outside of the house began to rattle in a haunting harmony with the trees. Suddenly a scream coming from within the house pierced the night. ‘

Authors purpose: to build suspence

‘Hunger is a terrible illness tha taffects not only the body, but the mind and spirit as well. Throughout the country, hungry children are suffering, and many are dying. SOmething can be done about this problem. Something must be done about this problem. Will you help?

Authors purpose: to persuade the reader to take action
