What is a skin diver piercing?

Is it a surface piercing? Can you use the studs in your ears as a way of stretching them from a small size (20gauge standard) http://www.wholesalebodyjewellery.com/acatalog/Titanium_Barbells_Labrets_.html For some reason the webpage calls them labret studs but the page says skin diver.
