Cartilage piercing irritation after 1 year.?
I have 3 cartilage piercings in my right year. I got all three in a 2 month period 1 YEAR AGO. After about 4-5 months I put sterling silver studs in them, 2 of them have been fine but the third on has always started to form a bump in the back ( a tiny one ) and it burns and hurts and feels raw. So i take the earring out for that one, and it heals then I put it back in and it happens Again.! Now I got hoops 18 gauge for all 3, before I had 22 gauge. Now all of them feel that same pain, ! what is the matter with these piercings, they are such a hassle and never heal properly…..
Sterling silver actually isn’t appropriate for long-term wear. They can tarnish in your ears, discolor your skin and irritate your piercings. You need surgical steel, titanium, glass, something with a stable finish.
18G is pretty small for a cartilage piercing, they might be migrating. I’d advise you to go to a professional piercer – a licensed one, at a tattoo and piercing shop – and have them take a look. The bump on the one is probably hypertrophic scarring but the only reason I can think of for the irritation and raw feeling after all this time is a reaction to jewelry or migration or something like that. A professional piercer would have a better idea though.
If these were gun pierced (I suspect they are because of your choice of jewelry and the size) that is probably also part of the problem. A gun isn’t appropriate for piercings like this, they can shatter your cartilage.
