ear piercing infection causes
Can piercing your ear cause an ear infection?

I’m thinking of getting my ear pierced but is it possible that it can get infected? If so, what can I do to prevent from it getting infected. What are the possibilities that I’ll get infected?

Skin protects the body from the outside world, any time you break the skin you run the risk of infection, whether it’s a cut or a piercing.

With piercings, to prevent infection you just need to follow some simple rules.

Soak 2-3 times per day with sea salt solution (saline). Mix 1/4 tsp non-iodized sea salt with 1 cup warm, distilled water. Soak for 10 mins. Gently remove any crusties (lymph) with a q-tip after your soak. Don’t touch or move the jewelry. Don’t let anyone else touch it either.

Soaps or antibacterial agents are not needed to heal a piercing. They only irritate the wound. Also people are told to rotate the jewelry when using soap, it not only irritates the wound but can drag bacteria and other material into it.

Now, this part is VERY important. If you do get pierced, please, please go to a proper studio where they use sterilized needles and jewelry. Piercing guns CAN NOT be sterilized. They tend to be covered in bacteria and left over biological matter from previous customers. You can contract some nasty stuff from them, including hepatitis C. All tools used in a piercing must be sterile, which requires an autoclave (there is chemical sterilization, but it’s generally only used in hospitals due to the high cost).

If you follow this advice, you should have a healthy, problem free piercing experience
